The state of hip hop is so bad right now that I’ve considered starting to put together my own lyrics and turn this shit around. Hip hop clubs are shit right now with terrible vibes… This is 2015 and people still get shot in clubs. That makes me want to shake my head in complete disappointment. People are still fighting over getting their shoes stepped on like this is middle school. You shouldn’t wear your nicest shoes out to overcrowded clubs where people bump into you an spill their drinks… and if you’re waiting outside of Foot Locker for those new sneakers at 6am instead of getting up for work, then you’ve got a whole other serious problem when it comes to your priorities.
DJ Mustard is a cancer. His beats all sound the same and the talent that raps on them seem to have the vocabulary of a 5th grader with a few “niggas” and “bitches” for extra flavor. Making up words that most people can’t seem to understand the logic behind, such as “thot,” seems to be a major part of the songwriting process. Whatever happened to wordplay, allusions, or rhyming? Rap is, in my opinion, a form of poetry put to music. It should be about REAL life experiences… If your label is renting a bunch of gold chains and expensive cars for your music video, but you’re still in debt after three albums, are you really stuntin’, or are you just being used to market a lifestyle that the average American could never truly hope to live?
The majority of mainstream hip hop is incestuous right now. What I see when I check out what my rap-loving friends are listening to is mostly a bunch of shit-heads calling themselves “artists” who think it’s their job to “inspire” younger shit-heads to rap the way they do, about bitches and hoes and money and cars and chains that they’ll never have, on beats that sound all sound the same… No innovation and barely any soul. This art form, which was essentially the genre that gave black people a legitimate voice in the United States and minority groups around the world a way to speak up against society’s ocean of unacceptable norms, has become a completely formulaic puddle of what it used to be. We need something new and inspiring that’s gonna raise a new generation with the right mindset to fix all the shit that we got wrong. And if we don’t get that, at least bring us more conscious rappers who don’t get washed up by their growing egos.
I love hip hop so much that I pretty much stopped listening to it. Most of the stuff out there right now is designed for the purpose of keeping our minds focused on the wrong things… This rap club music culture is played out, it’s time for that shit to die. Feel free to turn up, but don’t forget to turn up your mind.
